Exercising with Heart Disease
General Exercise Guidelines
- Get clearance from your doctor first before starting any exercise program
- Include a 5-minute warm up and 5-minute cool down with every exercise session to reduce oxygen deprivation to the heart.
- Engage in moderate-intensity physical activity such as brisk walking for at least 30 mins on most days of the week
- Monitor your exercise intensity and aim to stay within your target heart rate zone.
- Avoid strenuous activity in extreme environmental conditions such as hot and cold weather.
- If working with a trainer, inform them as well as your physician of any symptoms before, during and after exercise. Symptoms would include chest pain, extreme fatigue, indigestion, heartburn, breathlessness, ear or neck pain, headache, dizziness or racing heart.
- If you have been prescribed nitroglycerine, always carry it with you when exercising.
- Never exercise to the point of chest pain or angina.
- Make sure that if you are exercising in an exercise facility, ensure that is an automated external defibrillator (AED) available.
