Wondering if you might be depressed?

Everyone experiences bouts of the blues or periods of sadness now and then. However, if these feelings last more than a couple of weeks or interfere with daily life, you may be suffering from clinical depression.

Major depression is a whole-body illness that affects a person's body, feelings, thoughts, and behavior. Symptoms of depression can last for last for months and sometimes years.

Millions of people in the United States suffer from depression. It’s not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be willed or wished away. People with depression cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better.

The causes of depression are not always known. Research shows that depression may be inherited and that a chemical imbalance in the brain can play a role. A serious loss, chronic illness, difficult relationship, or unwelcome change can also trigger depression.

A person with depression may notice symptoms like:

  • prolonged loss of interest in home, work and personal appearance;
  • loss of interest in once enjoyable activities;
  • sudden changes (decreased or excess) eating or sleeping habits;
  • frequent, uncontrollable crying;
  • lingering, unfocused nervousness or grouchiness; and/or
  • persistent feelings of hopelessness and futility.

The good news is there’s help available. If think you’re suffering from depression, talk with your doctor or other healthcare professional. There are many effective treatment options like medication, counseling and even lifestyle changes that can provide real relief. Your doctor will also determine if you have an underlying medical condition that might be causing your depression symptoms.
