Putting Your Pet to Sleep

Many times, we are faced with the difficult decision of putting our pet to sleep. Our pets may have a terminal illness, reduced activity level, or simply be in too much pain. Having to make this decision may often complicate the grieving process as you may experience guilt or shame.

Stages of Grief

Elisabeth Kubler- Ross developed the five stages of grief. These stages are denial, anger, bargaining depression and acceptance. While they are called stages, it is important to note that you may not go through them in order and may not experience each stage.  The stages of grief can be experienced through a variety of losses beyond death.

Saying Goodbye

Unlike our human family members, we often do not have formal funerals for our pets. Though it is uncommon, it is important to still find a way a to memorialize the loss of your pet.

Am I Ready for Another Pet?

Sometimes part of our identity may be in being a pet owner. When we lose our pet, this leaves an emptiness in that identity. Before jumping into getting a new pet, be sure you have given yourself a chance to mourn and process the loss of your old pet. Only you will know when you are truly ready to open your heart and home to a new pet.
