Simple Tips for Healthy Holiday Eating

As the holiday season approaches, eating healthy can become extremely challenging.  Following a few basic tips will allow you to fully enjoy the holiday without totally forgoing all the delicious delicacies the holiday season brings. Often, we think skipping breakfast or lunch before the big Thanksgiving dinner or the office holiday party is an act of healthy proactive planning, think again. Skipping meals can lead to dehydration, a shift in blood sugar levels and cause fatigue. If skipping meals is not a part of your regular eating routine, it can lead to overindulging in unhealthy food choices once you return to eating.

Try planning meals ahead of time especially on the days you will be attending holiday events. Be sure to maintain your normal eating schedule just as you were prior to the holiday season. Two to three hours before the festivities begin, have a small meal or snack that includes fiber. Fiber is not only a good source for maintaining a healthy digestive track and promoting balanced blood sugar levels, it also has multiple health benefits that help keep you feeling fuller longer. Ultimately, this full feeling has the potential to come in handy and limit overeating which often occurs during the holidays.

For many, the end result of the holidays is weight gain. Drinking roughly 64oz. of water throughout the day will not only help keep you hydrated, but it can also flush toxins out of your body that have been ingested through food and alcohol consumption.  Both fiber and water aid in increasing energy levels and can encourage healthy weight loss during and after the holiday season has ended.
