Your skin is your body’s special defense and is the largest organ you have. There are three layers to your skin: the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer and contains a substance called keratin that helps waterproof the skin.  The dermis is the middle layer of the skin and contains a substance called collagen for strength, blood vessels for nutrition, and nerve fibers for sensation. Collagen is a fibrous substance found in cartilage and other connective tissues. Cartilage is the tough, flexible tissue that lines your joints and gives structure to your nose, ears, and other parts of your body. The dermis contains sweat and oil glands for temperature regulation and protection, while the hypodermis is the deepest layer of skin and contains fat for cushioning, insulation, and energy storage. Below are a few tips to keep for keeping your skin healthy and protected.

Tips for healthy skin:

  • Avoid intense sun exposure, use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.
  • Avoid using tanning beds or sunlamps.
  • Bathe in warm water as opposed to hot water temperatures.
  • Use mild cleansers to limit skin irritation.
  • Drink plenty of water and use gentle moisturizers, lotions, or creams.
  • Include omega 3 fatty acid, avocados, and nuts in your diet. Reduce alcohol consumption.
  • Get enough sleep - Experts recommend about 9 hours a night of sleep for teens and 7-9 hours for adults.

Remember that a positive healthy lifestyle will keep you and your skin healthy, so take care of the skin you are in.
