Domestic violence can affect anyone, regardless of gender, age, or background. As a colleague or manager, your support can make a meaningful difference. If you’re concerned that someone you work with is struggling, the following are ways you can help.
1. Offer Yourself as an Available Support
- If you’re concerned about a colleague, find an opportunity to speak to them privately.
- Share what you have observed, for example: “I’ve noticed you haven’t seemed to be yourself lately. Is everything ok? If there’s anything you want to talk about, I’m here for you”. Managers should stick to work-related concerns such as punctuality, work quality, attendance, and behavior.
2. Listen Without Judgment and Respect Their Autonomy
- Validate their experience by saying something like, “That sounds really difficult. You don’t deserve this.”
- Avoid acting as their counselor or trying to be an expert.
- Don’t make decisions for them. It is important that safety be prioritized prior to any decisions being made. Working with a professional around considerations and safety planning is important. Certain actions can trigger an escalation in behaviors.
3. Help Connect Them with Resources
- If there are immediate concerns for their safety or the workplace, consult with Human Resources and Security.
- Encourage them to connect with Human Resources to discuss measures to ensure their ongoing safety and security at work, as well as workplace policy including time off that may be available.
- Encourage your coworker to seek help from the Employee Assistance Program (information below) or the National Domestic Violence Hotline: 800-799-7233 / thehotline.org. You can even offer to make the call with them.
4. Keep Checking In
- Let them know your support is ongoing.
- Even small gestures of kindness can help them feel less isolated.
