Tips for Parenthood Planning

Prepare Yourself Emotionally

  • Be Confident. It is easy to feel overwhelmed by the unknown but use this time to educate yourself on child development to feel more confident and prepared.
  • Have a Good Support System. If you suffer from mental illness, it is important to make sure that you are getting the help you need. Managing any new life transition can be difficult in and of itself but doing so while struggling with a mental illness can be even harder. If you don’t have a mental illness, now is a good time to evaluate your support system.
  • Keep the Spark Alive. Research completed by the Bringing Baby Home Program indicates that relationship satisfaction decreases by 67% for new parents. It is important to remember to take the time to nurture your romantic relationship.

Prepare Yourself Physically

  • Make Space. As you prepare for a baby, it is important to examine your surroundings and ensure that you have a home environment that is conducive for a growing child. Not only do you want to make sure you have the space for all the new baby gear and toys, but you also want to ensure that you can baby-proof your space to keep up with a curious toddler on the move.
  • Stay Healthy. Exercise during pregnancy is not only safe but often recommended. It is important to note that even for dads-to-be, a healthy lifestyle benefits you and your baby as you pass along healthy habits.

Prepare Yourself Financially

  • Start Saving. It can cost on average $12,350- $14,000 a year to raise a child. If you do not already have an emergency fund, now is a good time to start putting money aside for the expenses of child-rearing and life in general.
