Risk Factors

  • Recent loss or losses 
  • History of family suicide, violence or substance abuse 
  • Mental health issues 
  • Struggle with sexual orientation 
  • Erratic, impulsive or risk-taking behaviors 
  • Lack of social support 
  • Feelings of low self-esteem, shame, worthlessness 
  • Withdrawal from others 
  • Bullying 
  • First time stressful events 
  • Access to lethal means

  • I care about you. 
  • Are you alright? 
  • Listen 
  • Is there a problem that feels overwhelming? 
  • Listen 
  • Are you feeling hopeless, trapped? 
  • Listen 
  • How can I help? 

How to Help

  • Put together a safety plan, preferably with a mental health or healthcare provider. 
  • Connect child to mental health services. 
  • Teach problem-solving skills 
  • Create strong support connections 
  • Restrict access to lethal means 
  • Listen 

Call or text the 988 Lifeline at 988 for emotional support.

In an Emergency, call 911 or go to the ER.
