Main risk factors include:
- Mental health or substance use disorder or family history of such
- Medical conditions
- Prior attempts
- Chronic pain
- Violence in the home
- Access to weapons or other means
- Recent release from incarceration
- Exposure to other suicidal behavior
These risk factors can also appear in those who do not attempt to harm themselves.
Suicidal thoughts or actions are not to be ignored.
