Family Conflict During the Holidays?

Submitted by voduba on Thu, 11/23/2023 - 11:11

Are you worried about what topics are “safe” or not? Are you anxious that someone might comment on your appearance or try to start an argument? These are typical concerns during the holiday season, and being prepared can help avoid fights and disagreements. Here are some tips to help you prepare for a happy and fun get-together with your loved ones:

  • Keep an open mind – heading into a gathering expecting to experience disagreements with someone will make that an even more likely outcome
  • Visualize and be prepared to have a positive experience with everyone, and that will become the more likely outcome
  • Communicate with other family and friends who might be sympathetic to your situation and can help keep the peace
  • Set boundaries: Prepare some phrases and coping skills ahead of time in case conflicts arise
  • Talk to a therapist or counselor, or even a professional from your company’s EAP; they can help you prepare for the possibility of conflict.
