It's normal that relationships will change when a spouse is frequently out of the home. Although it may be challenging, it’s important to try to keep in touch during these times in order to maintain a strong relationship with your partner. Here are some ways to keep your relationship thriving during a deployment.

Talk About Your Upcoming Separation

Set aside some time to discuss feelings and plan how each of you will cope during your time apart. Discuss how you will handle emergencies, parenting issues, finances, etc.

Do the Obvious and Stay in Touch

Current technology offers multiple paths for communication such as email, phone calls, video-chat, and regular mail. Talk about which one makes you feel more comfortable.

Establish Mutual Trust

This is especially important during a separation or deployment. Practice open and honest communication.

Stay Active

Keeping yourself fulfilled will allow you to better handle the separation. Connecting with other military spouses and keeping your children on track can be helpful.

Share Everyday Events at Home

Keeping your spouse in the loop about simple things will help them to feel closer to you. Examples would be sharing about what your pet did today or what your child said last night. Be sure to give plenty of details.

Learn About Your Spouse’s Routine and Their Job

Even if they can’t tell you everything they do, you can talk about other activities that keep him or her occupied.

Send Care Packages

Deliver “a piece of home” including items that are significant to both of you. Be creative.
