Type 2 diabetes can impact a person’s quality of life and, if left untreated, can cause a lot of health issues. It is important to recognize the signs and symptoms of elevated blood sugar levels and understand what health issues can develop if left unmanaged.

Elevated blood sugar levels can cause symptoms such as blurry vision, increased thirst, frequent urination, slow healing of wounds and numbness/tingling in hands and feet. If any of these symptoms are present, it is best to consult your physician and get your blood sugar levels checked.

Complications of type 2 diabetes can arise and effect skins condition such as rashes, blisters, or eyelid styes. High levels of insulin in blood cause an increased risk for bacterial and fungal skin conditions. It is best to keep skin clean and moisturized. It is important to routinely check your skin for cuts, bruises, and other injuries.

Another complication of type 2 diabetes is vision impairment or loss caused by glaucoma, cataracts, and retinopathy. Scheduling regular eye exams can help catch many of these issues, therefore it is important to stay up to date with routine eye appointments.

A third complication of this chronic health condition is diabetic neuropathy which occurs in about half of all diabetic patients. Diabetic neuropathy causes nerve damage. This affects feet, legs, arms, and hands causing a tingling, numbness, and a decrease in sensitivity to temperature as well as weakness in the limbs. Regular foot exams are essential along with keeping feet clean.

Unmanaged diabetes can also lead to kidney and heart disease. Regular checkups with your doctor are key to managing type 2 diabetes and lowering the risk of developing additional health conditions.
