Sticking to Your New Year’s Goals
Ahh, another new year is upon us. This year brings new light and a fresh start. This is the perfect time where we can dig deep and create new meaningful goals in all aspects of our lives. We may find new love, rekindle relationships with family and old friends, improve our health, gain financial independence, or make a career change. Creating goals, gaining social support, and knowing why you want to achieve certain goals can help you to stay motivated.
Goals give us purpose and direction. Turn everything you would like to achieve into a goal. Write out your “SMART” (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely) goals somewhere you can visualize and read them each day. Once you have achieved a specific goal, check it off your list. High five each small victory along the way to help push you into creating larger goals.
Gaining social support can be helpful while pursuing new goals. Make friends and family aware of the changes for added support. Individuals who truly care about you will encourage you to avoid temptations and hold you accountable. A powerful motivator to keep you on track is having emotional support from loved ones. Remember that replacing unhealthy habits with new ones takes time and you may slip from time to time. If you lapse, forgive yourself and get back on track. The end game is to enhance your well-being, so it is never too late to start again.
Defining your “why” can help you to leap out of old ruts and create new meaningful goals towards self-fulfillment. Have fun and enjoy your journey, pursuing wellness, and your new goals, as they should reduce, not add, stress to your life. Don’t give up and rejoice in each milestone. You can do it!
